Recently while driving down the road singing “Come on Eileen” at the top of my lungs (aka “dorking out”–in my minivan, no less), I realized that after 20+ years I still have no idea what they are actually saying. My husband has a particular sentimental attachment to this song because it was a popular party song in his fraternity. Every time it comes on he gets this look in his eye and I can tell he is about to “pogo-stick dance” all over the living room screaming “Come on Eileen” and tell me again about the glory days (okay, some glorious, others less than glorious) of his fraternity. (To be fair to Jake, he is always great about listening to me rehashing my own glory days.) So, I asked Jake if he knew the words to the song–I am always in awe of how many song lyrics he knows–and so he started to sing… “Come on Eileen… I swear at this moment… Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah… you mean everything…Du du du…” A-ha! I knew it! I’m curious to how many people out there really know what that song is all about. Oh well, I love it anyway.

I also love this family… Dan and… wait for it… Eileen!  Jake met Dan and Eileen in college. I am sure Eileen has seen the pogo-stick dance. Dan was a fraternity friend of Jake’s and they have remained good friends which means I’ve been lucky enough to get to know them too. I always leave their house wanting to be a better Mom. Eileen is so on top of everything and has this inspiring ability to make sure there is a bit of childhood magic in her kiddos lives. She introduced me to Elf on the Shelf (which my kids went nuts for!), fairy gardens, and elaborate notes from the tooth fairy. Their kiddos are also two of my favorites to photograph. I can’t get enough of their daughter’s freckles and their son’s infectious smile.

These are so beautiful, Jody – lovely light, lovely family!

(My husband & his frat have that soft spot for The Proclaimers. I Would Walk 500 Miles. Remember that? We had to have it at our wedding, with the special dance… Ugh :) )

Ruffles + a faux fur + hot pink + converse= an awesome session with a stylish and fun family. A few days later, I received an email that one of the girls (who had initially been reluctant about the photo shoot) told her Mom she now wants to be a model. I have no doubt she–and her sister–could do it!

my best birthday present ever

Seven years ago today, after a year of trying, I woke up early on my birthday and found out that I was pregnant with Stella. It was my best birthday present ever… forever.

This morning, I received my second favorite present ever; my sweet husband gave me a handwritten note that I’ll always cherish. I told him it would be one of “those” letters that the kids will find some day digging through boxes in the attic. Surrounded by dust and sentimental trinkets that I really should have thrown away long ago, they’ll read it in the dim light beneath a swinging bare bulb pull chain fixture. The thought of it makes me a little sad, but also happy that they’ll know how lucky I was to marry their father.

Another thing they will find in the attic, will be my third favorite birthday present–Henry, a stuffed dog that I received on my 9th (I think) birthday. I actually remember how excited I was when I opened the present. Inspired by Toy Story 3 (I think), Stella made me pull Henry out of the attic recently (yes, I still have him–unlike Andy, I actually took Henry to college!). She wants me to fix him–sew up his holes, find another eye, and clean his faded yellow fuzz. He’s not looking too good these days. We’ll see how that works out. I think he may be headed back to the attic soon.

Anyway, there you go… a beautiful faint pink line, a handwritten note, and Henry. My favorite birthday presents.

(I have been a bad blogger. I have some family sessions I’ll post soon. I am looking forward to a slow winter and taking some time to practice shooting indoors… hopefully with a new medium-format film camera if I could ever make up my mind on which one to buy.)
