Letter to our Daughters May 2012Letter to Our DaughtersLetters to Our DaughtersLetter to Our DaughtersLetters to Our Daughters

And I hold you…

And I forget that you’re young.
And I kiss you…
And I know that you’re so young.
And I need you…
And I forget that you’re young.
And I please you…
And I know that you’re so young.

The Ravonettes/Forget That You’re Young - (Pilar’s Favorite Song)

Pili-Pie,

You recently turned four and it seems that not a day goes by that I am reminded that you are much-too-quickly becoming a little girl and less less of a baby. I adore the little girl you are becoming, really I do, but I already miss that baby so much. This next year will be your last year home with me before you go to kindergarten. How did that happen so quickly? I wonder if you notice me, watching you from a distance, with a lump in my throat trying to soak up every minute of you? I’m worried I am missing it–missing you. That I am too caught up in the daily grind of life–juggling schedules, trying-my-hardest-to-keep-a-semi-clean house, homework… too caught up in facebook, blogs, pinterest and photography. And I’m terrified that time will steal or dull these memories like it has so many others. I don’t want to forget:

  • the way you tightly grasp my hand and skip freely as we walk down the street
  • the soft and sweet “energy kisses” you give me on my cheek when I am struggling to carry you in my arms (which is as often as possible because I know it won’t last much longer)
  • playing hide-and-seek with you which usually involves you sitting in the middle of the room with a blanket over your head in a fit of giggles (between you and I, you are pretty bad at hide-n-seek)
  • how me kissing your boo-boos magically makes it all better (what parent doesn’t wish this could last a lifetime?)
  • the way you drift off to sleep nuzzled and breathing softly into my neck when we cuddle at bedtime
  • how your sleepy cocoa brown eyes light up–surprised and happy–to see me when I wake you in the morning
  • the way you say, “I’m drinky,” instead of “I’m thirsty.” (I make sure no one corrects you.)
  • the way you cock one eyebrow and shrug your shoulders and say, “Well… okay. If you say so.”
  • how you excitedly run to the car when it’s time to pick up Ben and Stella from school (I hope you are always so close)
  • the view of you gleefully singing in the rear view mirror of the car… “And I know that you’re so young…”

I don’t want to forget any of it, so I promise to be better about balancing my time and truly being WITH you and not just in the same room as you. I am going to take fewer jobs, really try to switch to film… spend less time taking photos of you playing and more time playing with you. I don’t want to have any regrets about this last year at home with you. You may not be a baby forever, but you will always be my baby.

Kisses for energy,
Mom

I couldn’t love this more. What a wonderful letter, and these emotions hit so close to home for me, with only one more month until my baby turns 4. Your images of her are delightful, so much of her personality shines through, and I loved reading about all of the things that make her who she is at this moment in her life. Perfect, Jody.

Jody, you painted such a colorful picture of Pilar and the little things she does that are so unique. I don’t ever want to forget those special little things my girls do, either. I just adore the energy kisses and “I’m drinky”. :) What a precious girl you have. Love your letter and your images. <3

Gorgeous Jody….really gorgeous. Would you mind me asking if these are digital or film? I love the color, feeling and texture.

Jil Anderson - May 25, 2012 - 7:48 pm

So wonderful Jody -both the photos and the letter. I always tell Wade that he will be my baby forever. And, I mean it too. Time goes so quickly. Thanks for sharing.

Jil Anderson - May 25, 2012 - 8:39 pm

one more thing Jody. Your comment about Pilar saying “I’m drinky” reminded me that Wade used (still does?) say “Too tasty, Mommy” when something is spicy. Still cracks me up!

Beautiful Jody! You are ao humble – as a photographer, as a writer, as a mother. I find that the hardest thing to capture in a photo of a child is there smile – yet, Pilar is always has an ear to ear grin in almost all of your pictures of her. You are doing something right!

Dear, dear Jody,
I am continuously smiling with your “motherhood”. You are a gift and that you married my son is simply bliss. Thank you and much love, Karla

Thanks everyone! I don’t mind at all Susan–they are digital and shot around noon. I was trying to keep her in open shade but some are in direct sunlight. I was trying to keep the sun behind her as much as possible.

*gulp* tearing up reading your letter Jodes. Pilar is just so beautiful and these photos really show off her personality so well… i can hear her little giggle in the watermelon photo. :)
It does not seem possible that she will be going to Kindy next year? Sniff sniff. I can’t wait to see you shoot more film.. i feel it is such a perfect medium for your style of shooting. xo

Kirsty-Abu Dhabi - May 27, 2012 - 11:11 am

I love that you wrote all these moments down to treasure them – she’ll change too fast as we both know – and these little Pilar-isms will change. She is such an adorable sweetie

Jody, your words are so very special and combined with those amazing images, just so powerful. I feel your love for your sweet girl, it made me tear up, in the best way possible. <3
